Work from my Bachelor of Fine Art thesis show

___________________________

This is almost a re-post. I had to re-make this piece because as it was being shown in a gallery some of the sticks fell off... a few times... So they asked me to re-make a piece that took me about a month to complete in two weeks. I somehow got it done in one week. This piece won the "NCECA Undergraduate Award for Excellence" at the 2009 NCECA conference. I don't like to be boastful, but it is a great thing to happen for my artistic career.

Anyway... About the piece. Here I spelled out the word "Digital" using ceramic sticks I made. Nothing is slip cast. They are pinned and glued to a plexiglass board, which is hanging 7" off the wall.

In this line of work, using everyday objects as text, I wrote out concepts which I have struggled to grasp in binary code. I chose binary code because of its simple yet complex characteristics. In binary code, you either have a “1” or a “0”. It’s simply one or the other. However, when put together in a sequence they can represent characters which form words used for communication. Everything input into a computer has to be filtered through binary code. I compared this to the way people think. Everything I feel is brought into me through a language that I understand. The objects I choose may or may not make sense to everyone because it is the mental connection I make when I relate difficult concepts to my tangible, physical world. The viewer may be able to draw the same connections I do, or to their own ideas. These pieces also work as hieroglyphs in that sense, giving this body of work a bilingual quality that I enjoy.

Dear rebootmaster2001,
following an earlier comment on your wonderful sculpture I would like to point your attention to a rather new group called the :icondeviated-path: they recently started accepting sculpture, and are really on the look out for good sculpture. I was sending them the link to your work.
see correspondence under [link]
As the traditional sculpture is still underrepresented in DA (unfortunately) I see there a good opportunity to support and create a valuable platform for our medium. Should you not yet know the platform, I would like to ecourage you to contact them, contribute to the group gallery or affiliate yourself as a member.
Stay well! ;-)

This is just amazing! Love the shadows, love the display, love, love, love the use of sticks. But then, I'm a fan of sticks. :)

Cheers,
